Government Aims

Aims & Objectives

In 2000, the Government set casualty reduction targets for road traffic collisions by the year 2010 (against an average for 1994-98). Camera partnerships were established to form part of the wider road safety strategy to see

a 40% reduction in the number of people killed or seriously injured
a 50% reduction in the number of children killed or seriously injured
a 10% reduction in the slight casualty rate

Today, Cheshire Safer Roads Partnership aims to continue to support the Government's targets through reducing the number of people Killed or Seriously Injured (KSI) in traffic collisions on Cheshire, Halton and Warrington's roads.

Engineering, Education and Speed Enforcement are the tools we use to improve drivers' compliance with speed limits and increase understanding of the dangers/consequences of excessive speeding. Every driver has the potential to make a difference by simply observing speed limits and driving appropriately the prevailing road conditions.

In 2004, 741 people were victims of road collisions on our roads throughout the County. The 'ripple' effect from just one serious collision is startling; Health and Emergency Services are put under pressure, traffic flow and road structure are disrupted, whilst there is no way to quantify the pain and suffering caused to the friends and relatives of road casualties.

Speed almost always plays a significant role in the contribututory and/or outcome of a road traffic collision. It is a tragedy when anyone is killed or injured on the roads, but it is double the tragedy if it could have been prevented. Through speed management, many collisions could either be avoided entirely or the severity of the collision and its casualty victims could be reduced
