Work-related road safety shouldn't be overlooked.

RoSPA (The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents) estimates that 30% of road crash fatalities involve vehicles being driven for work purposes, whilst car and van drivers (who cover 25,000 miles a year as part of their job) are at virtually the same risk of being killed at work, as construction.

Your employees are your best asset, therefore it is worthwhile adopting a proactive approach to Managing Occupational Road Risk (MORR). You would be protecting their health and in doing so, saving you money in the long-term - road crash survivors can require paid sickness leave to recover from their injuries, whilst family/friends of lost loved ones are likely to require time off due to the trauma and devastation encountered. If your company vehicle is damaged or written off, this is going to cost you time and money.

Here are just a few questions you may want to think over:

  1. Could your Health and Safety Policy be modified to include minimising risk of those who commute and travel for work?
  2. Perhaps you have a 'Journey for Work' Policy that provides information to staff about keeping safe on the roads?
  3. How many of your staff use a vehicle to commute to work?
  4. How many staff use company cars? Have many reported crashes do you have per annum?
  5. Do you keep a record of theses collisions and carry out a regular analysis to identify any trends? Do you encourage other sustainable modes of transport?
  6. Do you have a system in place that records who is driving which vehicle at anytime?
  7. How many of your drivers have been reported by a member of the public, fined, or are gaining points on their licence?
  8. Do you account for journey breaks when issuing delivery times?
Do you incentivise options such as car sharing ?
